Western Red Cedar is coniferous softwood native to the Pacific Northwest areas of North America and is a member of the Cypress family. The heartwood is reddish or pinkish brown to dull brown and the sapwood is almost white. The wood is generally straight grained and has a uniform but course texture.
Western Red Cedar is comparatively soft and light in weight. It has low overall strength but when dry, is a dimensionally stable wood. Movement in service is rated as small.
Western Red Cedar is an excellent thermal insulator and has a low conductivity value.
Western Red Cedar has a low flame spread rating and resists the spread of fire.
Because of its low density, Western Red Cedar has excellent acoustical properties.
The durability of Western Red Cedar heartwood is legendary and the heartwood is very decay resistant.
